Trend Watch: Slate Effect Tiles

Slate has been an architects’ roofing material of choice for hundreds of years, and with many original slate tiles still in use, it’s clear to see that it is not only a beautiful material but highly durable too.
Whilst slate has traditionally been seen as a perfect choice for older homes, it’s now being integrated with modern architecture and used more and more in interiors for flooring, walls and worktops.
Its eye-catching natural textured surface and deep tones ranging from near-black to charcoal grey effortlessly add depth and dimension to any space. Whether used in a traditional country kitchen or a clean contemporary bathroom, the organic features of slate add a rough luxe feel to any room.
Why choose slate effect tiles?
Slate is no longer just a material used for roofing; it’s become increasingly popular to incorporate slate through interior design due to its natural feel as well as its hard-wearing properties.
Whilst natural slate tiles offer beautiful organic texture and durability, in the home they can require lots of maintenance to keep them looking their best.
Along with the constant upkeep, natural slate tiles are quite brittle so can be easily broken. That’s where slate-effect tiles come in. They offer the practical properties of porcelain tiles, but with the natural aesthetics of slate, making them the perfect alternative option. Advanced inkjet technology enables us to print ultra-realistic stone effect designs, meaning that our slate effect tiles look incredibly close to the real thing.
Whilst natural slate can be pretty high-maintenance, slate effect tiles require far less upkeep to preserve their attractive looks; just clean them regularly as you would with other tiles to keep them looking great for years to come.
From a practicality point of view, if any damage is done to your slate-effect tiles, you can easily find a matching tile to replace the damaged ones. This is much more difficult with natural slate, as the wide variety of shades and tones can make it nearly impossible to find a match.

Slate Rock: 3 ways to create an on-trend slate bathroom
Whilst our Slate Rock tiles work perfectly in kitchens, hallways and conservatories to add an element of natural luxury, we think they are the ideal choice to create a tranquil bathroom. We’ll show you three ways to use Slate Rock tiles to create your dream on-trend slate bathroom.
1. Coordinate your colour scheme
Use matching slate tiles on both your walls and floor for a calm and understated luxurious feel to easily create a relaxing spa-at-home atmosphere.
We’ve opted for the large format Slate Rock tiles in the lightest shade, Bone, on both the walls and floor to create a seamless transition, creating a light and open bathroom with a calming feel. We’ve accessorised with white hardware and pops of copper to add warmth, along with green plants to add colour and life to the room.
2. Create a statement wall
Use dark slate tiles to create a feature wall or statement backsplash for the ultimate rough luxe feel.
The contrast between the light and dark tones of the Grey & Black Slate Rock tiles create a contemporary look with the luxe feel of slate. We’ve accessorised with black hardware and furniture using clean lines throughout to maintain a polished modern look.
3. Mix & match colours & formats
Use a mixture of Slate Rock tile formats and shades to create a highly customised look, no matter the style of your bathroom.
With three colourways and both large format and mosaic tiles to choose from, there are so many ways to combine Slate Rock tiles.
We’ve opted for large format Slate Rock tiles in Black on the main floor and back wall, with the Grey large format tiles on the two opposite walls. To mix it up, we added the Black mosaic tiles to the floor in the shower unit and a shower shelf using the Grey mosaic tiles. The combination of both large and small tiles helps to add interest and another dimension to the room, for that natural luxurious look.
