How To Style Square Tiles

How To Style Square Tiles

We’re going to discuss how to create a number of looks using square tiles featuring our popular range, Vermont, so that you can capture their utmost beauty.

Interior design trends are constantly evolving, though one that never seems to shy away from the spotlight is square tiles. Although it might be overlooked by the ever-popular Metro tiles and other rectangular styles, they’re a versatile tile you won’t want to neglect.

Whether you choose large square floor tiles or smaller, square wall tiles, there are plenty of options to choose from and with that, lots of ways you can dress them to suit your style.

We’re going to discuss how to create a number of looks using square tiles featuring our popular range, Vermont, so that you can capture their utmost beauty.

Benefits of square tiles

#1: White square tiles make a great, plain canvas to work from

There are plenty of benefits to square tiles and they often go amiss as homeowners can overlook their simplicity for being “too basic” when in reality, they make for the easiest canvas to work from. This is particularly the case for white, glossy square tiles.

However, using these helps to ensure that you avoid the end result of a chaotic, cluttered living space when an alternative shape, style or texture of tile has been wrongly chosen or accessorised.

#2: Most simple square tiles are affordable

When focusing on the small, white square tiles, you’ll find that from many retailers, they’re extremely affordable. You can usually find them within every budget range due to the principle that the simpler the tile, often the cheaper it is.

Yet, some of the more decorative and flamboyant square tiles can start to creep up in price a little. That’s why, like any other tile, it’s important you know how to style it so that it looks the best and really captivates your living space - we’ll get onto this later.

#3: Square tiles look great everywhere

Whether your home is a multi-million mansion or a small cottage, varying sizes, colours and patterned square tiles can work their magic to beautify your living space so that it not only compliments your interior theme but makes your home the best it possibly can be.

For smaller spaces, large square floor tiles help to open the area and create an illusion that the floor is larger than it is. Likewise, large square floor tiles in a marble pattern can add elegance to big - or small - open hallways, making a bold, “I’m luxurious!” statement.

Ways to style square tiles:

So, now that you know the benefits of square tiles, let’s take a look at styling them. At Tile Giant, we have a comprehensive stock of square tiles so you can select a range best suited to your individual taste.

Our product range includes small square mosaics like our Tuscan tiles or mosaics with a mix of large and small squares like our Copper Luxe tiles to glazed multi-tonal Marlow tiles, available in a series of colours. We’ll take a look at how you can incorporate them into your home in a way that works for you.

#1: Go minimal with white square tiles

The first style had to be minimalistic. A plain white square bathroom tile isn’t going to make the most daring design statement yet it’s minimalism and the fresh appeal is what makes it a homeowner’s go-to for both bathrooms and kitchens. Its simplicity offers you a lot of margin for creativity, so experiment!

Pair different coloured accessories, grouts and textures and find a tile pattern that’ll bring the quirky, individuality to your room. You don’t have to settle for white square tiles paired with dark grout, though it’s an excellent choice for a contemporary and versatile scheme.

#2: Get colourful and pair multi-tonal tiles together

Although white square tiles are great when paired with colourful grout, some homeowners will find that this can be a little too bland for their taste buds - and that’s fine. We have a stunning selection of colourful, glazed square tiles, say hello to our Marlow tiles. We bring you a rustic tile that’s on-trend yet has a traditional twist.

The Marlow tile is available in the following shades: Blush, Turquoise, Sea Blue, Pebble Grey, Spruce Green, Bone and of course, White. Each colour is in its pastel form so that these tones beautifully melt into your room, careful not to overpower it but add that splash of colour you require.

With the coloured Marlow tiles sold in a mix of tones, you can combine these together and lay them with white grout to create an interesting feature that’s like no other. We feel these tiles look best as a kitchen splashback to open up space in between your cupboards and inject life to what’s usually an overlooked area.

Alternatively, you can stick to the basics and select our Marlow White square tiles with white grout to create a basic, cream backdrop that, when looked at, offers personality to the room with its rustic, “handcrafted” style.

#3: Opt for a chequerboard effect

Another way you can incorporate square tiles to your home is through a chequerboard style - something that is growing in popularity with interior designers and DIY stylists.

Of course, the original black and white chequerboard style works wonders with creating an eye-capturing centrepiece to your room, though getting creative and mixing different shades like grey and green, pink and cream and others, can be just as mesmerising if not more.

First off, let’s take a look at how you can style our Cementum tiles to create the traditional chequerboard effect on your kitchen or bathroom walls. Obviously, if you’re going traditional you should opt for the White and Black choices. However, as these tiles have a gentle, undulating surface and edge, you get an artisan feel which is perfect for adding flair to this otherwise traditional chequerboard design.

Dress with contemporary furnishings and go for nature-inspired materials like deep, warm woods, glass plant holders, steel-effect bar stools and more. You can also combine the Cementum Black & White Pattern Mix tile with these tiles to add Victorian flair to your room. Alternatively, the Light Grey and Dark Grey Cementum tiles are the perfect small, grey square tile to use for a slightly more subtle chequerboard design when used as a replacement for the black.

#4: Mix and match your tile layout (& colours)

Building on the idea of mixing and matching your tile colours, we’ve discussed how you can combine similar tones and contrast shades through a chequerboard effect but furthermore, you could also alter your tile layouts.

When done on the same wall or floor space, this can make for a stand-out statement that screams “look at me!”. This is where your creativity comes into play so think out of the box. Often, the best room sets are those that don’t stick to a theme and test the boundaries, plus they’re always more authentic too.

Though we’re not suggesting you have to go as crazy as the above example, hopefully, you can see that through clever use of both basic square tiles, coloured square tiles, varying layouts and contrasting grout colours, it’s easy to get funky, in-your-face walls. It all depends on how much of a statement you’re trying to make - we’ll leave that for you to decide.

#5: Go big and bold with large square tiles

Last but not least, another way to incorporate square tiles into your home is through our new range of large square floor tiles: Vermont. Sized at 800 mm x 800 mm, these striking, grey gloss marble effect tiles offer a range of design possibilities for both walls and floors.

With them, you can enlarge your living space and easily achieve the designer look thanks to the highly polished finish giving you a premium appearance that will elevate any room.

Grey square tiles are highly popular due to a recent movement into grey bathroom interiors, however, so are large format tiles. That way you can really embrace both trends to update your living space to a highly sought after style. Take a look at how we would dress these large grey square floor tiles below:

We’ve paired them with a pastel pink feature wall and furnishings to give a soft, feminine feel to the living space. When combined with light greys and black hardware, the room effortlessly blends together and ensures there aren’t any big clashes that could cause the room to feel chaotic.
