As a trendy aesthetic, industrial design has been around since the 1970s when factories and warehouses closed, paving the way for a modern era in interior design.
Instead of covering up the exposed brick and metalwork that was left behind, interior designers embraced it and styled homes around this. Fast forward 40 years and the industrial trend is still in full force with web searches around related terms more than doubling in the last five years.
It’s not just the inside of homes that have been ‘industrialised’, but the outside too. Creating an industrialised outdoor space is becoming more and more popular with homeowners as its simplicity and ruggedness makes it appealing to many.
So, how do you create the industrial “wow” factor in your garden or outdoor space? Here, we share our top 7 design ideas to spark your inspiration.
1 - Exposed Materials
The key to a rough and ready finish is to leave any industrial materials raw and untouched, letting the imperfections and quirks be the base of your moodboard. Salvage and reclamation yards can be a hive of inspiration for you to upcycle old materials and give a new lease of life to seemingly unwanted products.
If you want to create an industrial landscape, choose rough materials such as gravel or to complement outdoor tiles - our Synergy range of outdoor tiles, have a rough look to them which creates the perfect base for your industrial inspired outdoor space.
2 - Artificial Lighting
Steel, iron and copper are often the chosen material choice for industrial themed lighting. To create the perfect industrial exterior look, use vintage inspired lighting which ideally incorporates rustic and antique looking metallic elements.
Hang these lights on exposed brick walls or even use string lights to drape across the garden to create the perfect ambiance and a great setting to host a garden party in the summer after sunset.
3 - Concrete Jungle
Concrete doesn’t have to be relegated to the high street and complementing your outdoor space with softer, more natural features gives you an urban jungle feel without the harshness. Lots of well managed and healthy foliage, natural wood features and softer hues in complementary tiles can take the edge off distressed and worn outdoor tiles.
4 - Minimalism
Industrial exterior design goes hand in hand with minimalism with the concept that exeriors should be simple. Minimalism creates a striking look in industrial design as it allows the space to allude integrity and clarity.
By using our light grey Synergy tile, you will be able to create the perfect minimalist space. However, if you want to go over to the dark side, try our black tile. Match up with unfussy but practical garden furniture and a handful of modest plants to prove that less is more.
5 - Upcycle Vintage Furniture
Reinforce the heritage values of industrialisation by adding vintage furniture into the mix. However, keep in mind the point above about minimalism - you don’t want to make your outdoor space seem cluttered with garden furniture!
Old cast iron chairs, wooden stools or reclaimed benches can be given a new lease of life with a varnish or a lick of chalkboard paint and with the right scratch resistant outdoor tile you can be safe in the knowledge that your patio will not suffer any untoward damage.
6 - Mix Up Industrial and Organic
Steel and iron feature heavily in industrial design as these materials were at their peak during the industrial revolution. These materials look great when blended with organic materials like rustic wood, creating the perfect harmony between engineered and organic.
7 - Plants Galore
Once you have got everything in place, it’s time to accessorise. Plants are a great way to accessorise your industrial inspired outdoor space and also work well to soften the look of the sharp edges and dark colours used in industrial exteriors.
