Parquet flooring can be both a statement floor and at the same time bring a touch of history to your home, but there has been debate about herringbone vs chevron and what look you should choose for your home.

Parquet flooring can be both a statement floor and at the same time bring a touch of history to your home, but there has been debate about herringbone vs chevron and what look you should choose for your home.

Here we look at both options and help you decide which one best fits your interior.

What Is The Difference Between Chevron & Herringbone Patterns?

Both chevron and herringbone designs create stunning parquet flooring looks, but they do have their differences. Herringbone pieces are rectangular and cut at a 90-degree angle, whereas chevrons are cut at a 45-degree angle at the end and fitted together at one point, giving you a zig zag pattern. Chevron patterns will create a more spikey, modern, and geometric feel, while herringbone gives you a more traditional, heritage flooring look.

Both chevrons and herringbones will add stylish interest and warmth to your home.

Design A Creative Space With Chevron Layouts

Chevron pattern floors create effortless beauty with an intriguing yet simple style that fits all the key interior design trends. From old world charm to modern minimalism and industrial chic.

With its distinctive lines and clean-cut patterns, this flooring style is perfect for creating a statement in any room. Ideal for bedrooms, open plan kitchens, living and dining areas and hallways for an instant injection of chic style.

Whether you opt for classic or modern feel, this flooring will be a great pairing, creating visual interest with its geometric pattern, offering a stylish, European look.

Never heard of chevron designs and suddenly they are popping up everywhere? Chevron patterns have recently made their way back into our homes; however, this pattern goes back to ancient Greek pottery and textiles. The word “chevron” made its first appearance in the English language in the 14th century from the Latin word Vulgur meaning “rafters”, as it resembled two roof beams.

Happy Homes Need Herringbone

Herringbone never really went out of style and this look can bring a fresh perspective to interiors, creating an air of sophistication.

The staggered herringbone effect is immediately attention grabbing and the style works beautifully in more traditional settings, however it can also be styled with modern furnishings for an instant wow effect.

Wondering why this pattern is called herringbone? The name comes from its resemblance to the bone structure of the herring fish skeleton, dating back to the Ancient Roman Empire. Roman road builders used to lay their bricks in a V-shaped pattern on a bed of gravel to construct more stable roads. This type of masonry was known as opus spicatum, Latin for “spiked work”, and was even used in the famous dome of the Cathedral of Florence by Filippo Brunelleschi.

Herringbone layouts aren’t just confined to floors, why not also work this look into your walls with small format tiles, to create a striking double herringbone look guaranteed to be an instant showstopper.

Installing Your Parquet Flooring

Installing traditional chevron and herringbone flooring can be a very time-consuming process, as each piece needs to be meticulously laid out and fitted with precision. Using traditional, natural parquet flooring can also become a very expensive project, not just for the flooring itself, but also for the professional installation required to achieve the best finish. We have worked hard to create flooring that’s not only stunning, but also easy to install and maintain, so you can enjoy the parquet look in your home without the expense and hassle that comes with the real wood parquet flooring

The easiest option is our collection of large water-resistant laminate planks, which easily click together giving you instant herringbone or chevron look. Available in various styles. See some of our favourites below.
