The Details

Since launching our choice of Metro tiles, we’ve found them to be a popular choice for fulfilling the aesthetic need of a variety of room styles. Their unique brick-shape style, inspired by the retro decor of the London Underground, is extremely versatile, delivering a timeless contemporary design, that can be modernised or oppositely suit a vintage finish depending on your individual taste.

Our choice of Metro tiles are available in 3 soft, neutral shades: Ivory, White and Light Grey. Each shade effortlessly complements any bathroom or kitchen, regardless of the style, giving you a bare but beautiful, glossy canvas to work with. This way, you can then showcase your creative flare through accessorising each room just the way you’d like.

Why Use Them?

Metro tiles are made from the trusted, durable material that is ceramic. Its strong properties ensure these tiles are long-lasting whilst its glazed finish makes it super easy to clean. Of course, this ensures that you receive a great, functional addition to your room where they’d be subjected to moisture, spillages or grime and dirt.

How To Style Metro Tiles

Our selection of Metro tiles are easily adapted to suit a range of styles from modern, to retro to victorian. Find below some of the most popular ways to style our Metro tiles.

Styling Metro tiles in the bathroom

The above example showcases our white and light grey Metro tiles in a bathroom situation. The accessories and shade range remains rather neutral and earthy, whilst juxtaposing the modern look of the wall art, blinds and rug with the victorian style bath and wash basin.

The below example displays our ivory Metro tiles in a kitchen set up. Again, the tones of the room are all very subtle and earthy, tapping into a pale, pastel green shade and creating texture to the room with geometric and reflective kitchen appliances.

Once you’re happy with knowing how to style your new Metro tiles, it’s important to understand where you can use them.

Where To Use Them?

Our Metro tiles are suitable for indoor use only, as wall tiles in bathrooms or kitchens. These tiles should NOT be used for outdoor uses or alternative indoor uses such as floor tiles.

How To Install Them

Before you start, make sure the surface you’ll be tiling on is prepped accordingly. If you’re tiling onto freshly plastered walls, make sure they’ve been sealed properly using a quality sealant such as Mapei Primer G.

Once this has dried completely, use a good quality, ready mixed adhesive such as Mapei D2. This has all the strength and water resistance you need, whether you’re tiling a commercial kitchen or a shower area, as well as non slip properties.

For grouting Metro tiles, we always recommend Mapei Keracolour SF, which has super fine particles and helps to stop the surface of the tile from scratching.

Always remember to grout small areas at a time, usually around 1sqm, and clean up as you go to stop the grout drying to the surface of the tiles.

General Maintenance

In order to maintain the beauty of our Metro tiles, it’s important to understand both the product you’ve bought as well as the products used in application. That way, you’ll have knowledge to protect both the tiles and the surrounding products to keep them in their optimum condition for as long as possible.

The Tiles

As the tiles are made from glazed ceramic, upkeep is fairly easy. To prolong their beauty, it’s important you wipe them immediately after spillages and give them a thorough clean every so often. However, almost all spillages and splashbacks are simple to remove and won’t do any damage to the tiles due to their robust, durable characteristics.

To clean, we suggest using a mild detergent with hot water and apply this with a clean cloth or sponge. Change the water after the first initial rinse to ensure the sponge doesn’t leave a film of dirt on the wall. We then suggest wiping them dry with a cloth and applying polish for best results.

Good To Know: Metro tiles are suited for wall applications only so it’s unlikely you’ll come across sand or grit that could potentially dull or scratch the surface of the tile. The main cause for potential damage lies within the grout.

The Grout

As grout is naturally porous, it’s inevitable that it’ll collect dust and other remnants of dirt over time. Hence, you’ll be required to clean it on the odd occasion depending on how much traffic it sees.

We suggest using an old toothbrush, that’s been well washed to rid any chemicals from the bristles.

Good To Know: If any harsh chemicals come into contact with the grout it can strip the grout and make it more porous, inevitably leading to more dirt settling in the gaps.

A toothbrush is great for getting in between the tiles whilst the bristles are soft enough to ensure they don’t damage the grout.

Did You Know? Using a solution of vinegar and water is both more environmentally friendly and less harsh on the grout.

Bathroom Maintenance

If your new Metro tiles are to be installed in your bathroom, check your shampoo for colourants and dyes that could alter the colour of the grout over time. If you use such products, it’s vital that you wipe the tiles with clear water and wipe them dry with a clean cloth straight after use.

Alternatively, you can use a darker grout such as black or grey grout to help disguise the dirt, though whether it’s identifiable to the eye or not, these will still need cleaning.
